Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Acta Myologica is a quarterly journal that publishes articles relating to the study of primary myopathies, cardiomyopathies and neuromyopathies and their practical application
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor submitted elsewhere to another journal for consideration in the same or another language, in part or in full, nor any part of its essential content, tables, or figures.
  • Cover letter (You should upload your cover letter at “Comments for the Editor” section of the online submission process).
  • The main manuscript (including title, authors, affiliations, running title, abstract, key words, text, acknowledgements, financial/conflict of interest disclosure, sources of funding, references, tables and legends for figures) is in Microsoft Word (Use Word “template”).
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • Please ensure that you include all relevant references to previous articles in the ACTA Myologica. References adhere to the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines., for papers with more than three authors only the first three Authors must be indicated, followed by “et al.” (example: Cypess AM. N Engl J Med 2022;386:768-779).
  • Where available, DOI names for the references have been provided.
  • Images are in .TIFF or .JPEG format, resolution at least 300 dpi (upload in separate files, see Author Guidelines. for details. IMPORTANT: maximum dimension for each single file/image is 2 MB).
  • The (Authorship Statement Form) is properly filled in, signed, saved in .pdf format and uploaded in the next step of the submission process.
  • Starting from 2020, a publication fee of 200 Euros is required. 50% off is offered for members of Associazione Italiana  di Miologia (AIM) and/or Mediterranean Society of Myology (MSM) in good standing with dues (Use Printing Contribution Form)

Author Guidelines

Acta Myologica publishes articles related to research in and practice of primary myopathies, cardiomyopathies and neuromyopathies – including observational studies, clinical trials, epidemiology, health services and outcomes studies, case reports and advances in applied (translational) and basic research.

Starting from 2020, a publication fee of 200 Euros is required. The Corresponding Author must fill in the appropriate form and send it with the corrected proofs. 50% off is offered for members of Associazione Italiana di Miologia (AIM) and/or Mediterranean Society of Myology (MSM) in good standing with dues. A copy of the payment receipt for the current year is mandatory to prove the membership).

Manuscripts are examined by the editorial staff and evaluated by expert peer reviewers assigned by the editors. Both clinical and basic articles will also be subject to statistical review, when appropriate. Provisional or final acceptance is based on originality, scientific content, and topical balance of the journal. Decisions are communicated by email, generally within eight weeks. All rebuttals must be submitted in writing to the editorial office.

Manuscript submission must be done according to the following categories:

Original articles 

(maximum 5000 words, 8 figures or tables). A structured abstract of no more than 250 words should be included.

Reviews, Editorials 

(maximum 4000 words for Reviews and 1600 words for Editorials). These are usually commissioned by the Editors. Before spontaneously writing an Editorial or Review, it is advisable to contact the Editor to make sure that an article on the same or similar topic is not already in preparation.

Case Reports, Scientific Letters

(maximum 1500 words, 10 references, 3 figures or tables, maximum 5 authors). A summary of 150 words may be included.

Letters to the Editor 

(maximum 700 words, 5 references). Letters commenting upon papers published in the journal during the previous year or concerning news in the myologic, cardio-myologic or neuro-myologic field, are welcome. All the Authors must sign the letter.

Rapid Reports

(maximum 400 words, 5 references, 2 figures or tables). A letter should be included explaining why the author considers the paper justifies rapid processing.

Congress Proceedings

Congress or Meeting Proceedings will be taken into consideration.

lnformation concerning new books, congresses and symposia, will be published if conforming to the policy of the Journal.

The manuscripts should be arranged as follows:

Original and short articles and reviews must be written in English. The paper must include:

  • Title page
  • Summary: should be about 3000 typewritten characters (including spaces). It should be divided into 4 sections: Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions
  • A set of key words
  • Main text with the following sections: a. Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions for original and short articles and systematic reviews; b. Appropriate headings and subheadings for narrative reviews.
  • Ethical consideration
  • Acknowledgements
  • Funding
  • Conflicts of interest statement
  • Author’ contribution
  • References
  • Figure titles/legends
  • Tables

Pages should be numbered (title page as page 1).

Title page. The AA are invited to check it represents the content of the paper and is not misleading. A short running title is salso suggested.

Key words. Supply up to six key words. Whenever possible, use terms from Index Medicus – Medical Subject Headings.

Text. Only international SI units and symbols must be used in the text. Tables and figures should be cited in numerical order as first mentioned in the text. Patients must be identified by numbers, not initials.

Ethical consideration

All manuscripts submitted to Acta Myologica must include a statement detailing this, including the name of the ethics committee and the reference number where appropriate. In case a study has been granted an exemption from requiring ethics approval, this should be detailed in the manuscript, together with the name of the ethics committee that granted the exemption.
Manuscripts may be rejected if the Editor considers that the research has not been carried out within an appropriate ethical framework.

If a study has not been submitted to an ethics committee prior to commencing, retrospective ethics approval usually cannot be obtained and it may not be possible to consider the manuscript for peer review. How to proceed in such cases is at the Editor(s)’ discretion.

Authors will be expected to have obtained ethics committee approval and informed patient consent for any experimental use of a novel procedure or tool where a clear clinical advantage based on clinical need was not apparent before treatment.

For retrospective/protocol studies in which only aggregate data (e.g., incidences of TB in a certain region) are analysed, the Ethical Approval by an appropriate Committee is usually not required, as the data cannot be traced back to specific patients.

Acknowledgements

Within this section, list those contributors who have not met the authorship criteria.

Funding

Authors should describe in the “Funding” section, at the end of the manuscript, all funding sources (e.g. full name of funding organizations, grant numbers). The role of the sponsor, if any, in the study design, in the acquisition analysis and interpretation of data, in drafting the manuscript should be briefly described. If the sponsor has not been specifically involved in the research this should be stated.

Conflicts of interest

Authors must fully disclose any existing or potential conflicts of interest of a financial, personal or any other nature that could affect or bias their research. If applicable, authors are also requested to describe the role of the finding source(s) in the study design, data acquisition, analysis and interpretation, and writing of the manuscript. No potential conflicts of interest must also be explicitly stated.

Authors’ contributions

The individual contributions of authors to the manuscript should be specified in this section.

Illustrations. Figures should be sent in .jpeg or .tiff format, with at least 300 dpi as resolution. Composed figures must be saved as a single file in .Jpeg or .tiff format with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. The individual images within a compound figure must all have the same size (IMPORTANT: maximum dimension for each single file/image is 2 Mb). Legends should be typed double-spaced and numbered with Arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations. When symbols, arrows, numbers, or letters are used to identify parts of the illustrations, each should be explained clearly in the legend. For photomicrographs, the internal scale markers should be defined and the methods of staining should be given.

If the figure has been previously published a credit line should be included and permission in writing to reproduce should be supplied. Color photographs can be accepted for publication, but the cost to be covered by the authors.

PATIENTS IN PHOTOGRAPHS ARE NOT TO BE RECOGNISABLE

Tables. Tables should be self-explanatory, double spaced on separate sheets with the table number and title above the table and explanatory notes below. Roman numbers should be used for tables and correspond with the order in which the table is first mentioned in the text.

References.
Indicate all Authors, from 1 to 3. If their number is greater than 3, indicate only the first 3, followed by “et al.”
Arabic numbers in the text must be superscript.
References in the list must be numbered as they appear in the text, with the reference number superscript.

DOI NAME MUST BE INCLUDED WITH EACH REFERENCE (when available and preceded by https://doi.org/).  If not available, indicate the PMID number

The manuscript should contain a statement that the work has been approved by the appropriate Ethical Committee related to the institution(s) in which the work was and that subjects gave informed consent to the work. “Acta Myologica” requires institutional Ethics Committee approval for all human studies. For retrospective studies on patientsʼ records either a statement of approval or a statement exemption from the Committee is required. Ref N° of the Ethical Committee Approval must be indicated in the Authorship Statement Form. The study was approved by the Institutional Ethical Committee (the Name of the Institution must indicated in the Authorship Statement Form) and this is clearly stated in the Methods section of the article. This statement should also be provided upon submission of the manuscript. Studies involving experiments with animals must state that their was in accordance with institution guidelines and relevant national laws. (10) The article contains no libelous or unlawful statements, does not infringe the privacy of others, or contains material or instructions that might cause harm or injury. The corresponding author shall indemnify and hold the Editors and its agents and licensees harmless from any damages, costs, and expenses reasonable attorneyʼs fees and costs of settlement) resulting by reason of any claim, action, or proceeding finally sustained settled inconsistent with the foregoing warranties and representations. (11) All manuscripts are screened for plagiarism, which implies immediate rejection. Every author or co-author of any article published in this Journal is solely responsible for the contents of the article, for the statement made in their paper and for the material sent. Every author or co-author needs to fully comply with the Regulation 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation): “Article 9.
